Farmers’ Market at Howard County General

April 28th, 2010

Vegetables at Howard County Farmer's MarketBuying and eating fresh local produce in Howard County just got easier! From June 4 through October 29, local farmers will set up a weekly outdoor market at Howard County General Hospital in the back section of the visitors’ parking lot  to offer the best of their seasonal harvest.

Market hours will be from 2 until 6 p.m. every Friday – just in time to stock up for the weekend.

The market is part of the Howard County Economic Development Authority’s agricultural marketing program to support local agriculture. Howard County Farmers’ Markets are producer-only, which means vendors can only sell what they grow or produce from products raised on their farms. They feature the season’s freshest, locally grown produce, baked goods, fruits, flowers, and specialty items like honey and soap.

To find a list of seasonally available produce visit hceda.org.

    Hospital Volunteers Invaluable

    April 21st, 2010

Howard County General Hospital volunteers make a difference every day in the lives of patients, staff and visitors, always thinking of others and their comfort.Annual HCGH Volunteer Recognition Dinner at the Spear Center in Columbia

Volunteers give their time, which is a gift from the heart. Their gifts ultimately change lives. In fiscal year 2009, almost 500 hospital volunteers contributed over 45,000 hours of service, working in all areas of the hospital and the community in support of the hospital and its services.

A special recognition dinner on April 20 recognized all volunteers for their service and contributions. Awards were presented to current volunteers who reached specific milestones in calendar year 2009. Lifetime Awards were given to awardees who amassed between 100 and 14,000 total volunteer hours as of 2009.  HCGH President, Vic Broccolino, congratulates longtime volunteer,Theresa Balchun, who began at the hospital in 1987.

One special volunteer received an award for contributing 1,250 hours in 2009, the largest amount for the year. In addition, that same volunteer was recognized for a total accumulation of 14,000 total volunteer hours.

Other special recognitions included a volunteer who served the longest amount of time for ceremony attendees…she joined the team in October 1987. Additionally, awards were presented for two individuals who served as volunteer drivers during this year’s double blizzard.

    Thank you, HCGH Volunteers!
